Subscriptions and the public directory

Subscribing to a channel sends its alerts to you. A subscription belongs to your account, not to one device, so you need to sign in to subscribe.

You can start from:

  • The public directory on the Channels page: search for a channel and choose Subscribe or Request to subscribe.
  • A subscription link someone shared with you. It opens the app when it is installed, or a web page otherwise.

The app asks Subscribe to this channel? and shows what will happen:

  • Open channels subscribe you right away.
  • Approval required channels send your request to the channel’s managers. It shows as Pending until they approve it.
  • Channels with subscriptions Disabled say they are not accepting subscriptions.

Opening a subscription link never subscribes you without confirmation, and it gives no other access to the channel.

By default a subscription uses All my devices: every device bound to your account receives the channel, including devices you bind later.

To limit it, choose Choose devices while subscribing, or later under My subscription in the channel’s actions, and pick Selected devices. Only the devices you pick, and that are still bound to your account, receive the channel. If none of them are left, the subscription stays but reaches no device until you pick another or switch back with Use all my devices.

Your device choice is private. Channel managers see that you are subscribed, never which devices you use.

Open My subscription in the channel’s actions and choose Unsubscribe, or Withdraw request while it is pending.

If you own or administer a channel, choose Manage subscribers from its actions. Each row shows a subscriber’s email and status:

Status Actions
Pending Approve, Reject
Active Remove
Rejected, Removed Reopen

To invite people, choose Copy subscription link and share it. The link has the form https://<host>/subscribe/<channel_id>. It identifies the channel but is not a password: what happens when someone opens it depends on the channel’s Subscriptions setting.

Changing the Subscriptions setting affects only new requests. Existing subscribers stay subscribed.

Set a channel’s Visibility to Public in Channel settings to request a listing in the public directory. The channel appears there after the platform approves it. Anyone can browse the directory, even without an account; subscribing still follows the channel’s Subscriptions setting.
